Materials
For this painting I used a 12” by 11” inch canvas. For the color, I used acrylic paints.
Process
I started by outlining the image on the canvas. Then, I used a yellow wash on the background. I painted the sky blue, and the star yellow. I added layers of different shades of blue and yellow to add more detail. Then I painted the water a blue green. I added more layers and shades of the blue green in a ripple pattern around where the light of the star shined. Then I painted the star people on the water, and added the letters and roman numerals of the traditional tarot card.
Ideas
The idea for this card was to represent the traditional star tarot card in a new way. This was apart if my original inquiry idea, which was repainting some of the traditional tarot cards in my style. The star tarot card is supposed to represent hope and faith. In my painting, the star is the hope, and the star people are looking up towards hope. The water reflects hope around all of the star people. In the original, there is a woman looking up towards a star, but I wanted to make mine more unique so I chose to paint star people instead.
Citation
My current artist is William Joyce. He illustrated “The Sandman”, a children’s story book. I liked the way he painted the yellow sandman against the blue night sky background. My master artist is Vincent Van Gogh. Specifically, “Starry Night Over the Rhone”. I liked the way he painted the lights reflection in the water, and the little brush strokes he used to make the bigger image.
